Azumi tells the story of a young woman (Aya Ueto) trained since her youth to become an assassin. her mission, along with nine fellow assassins, is to kill all the warlords who will threaten the peace. But, to be assassin means to be able to become inhuman. This film, that takes place in an unreal feudal time of Japan, relates the striving of this young woman who tries to preserve the remaining traces of humanity left in her, helped in that by the sweet hearted and lovely Yae (Aya Okamoto), while her universe collapses around her.

This film by Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus) mixes frantic action sequences, typically Japanese humor, huge amount of blood and some touching moments. It is quite obvious that Kitamura’s only aim with this film is to entertain and in that matter, he succeeds perfectly. The viewer should not seek any deep messages in it nor let himself to be distracted by the numerous plot holes, but simply look at the spectacle and have fun. Perhaps the acting is not always very convincing but the majority of the young actors does an honest work. Moreover, the two female characters are so cute!!!
