Revenge Of the Sith Movie Mistakes

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) - 16 mistakes
Directed by George Lucas, starring Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Ian McDiarmid, Jimmy Smits, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Daniels, Christopher Lee, Frank Oz, James Earl Jones, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew

Please note: There are a few minor issues, such as Obi-Wan saying he hasn't used that name "since before you were born", among others, which can easily be attributed to character mistakes, ie. mis-remembering things, rather than "real" movie mistakes.

Continuity: Just before the lightsaber battle between Mace Windu and Darth Sidious, we see the lightsaber of Sidious ejected from his sleeve and he grabs it with his finger down the length of it. We then instantly cut to a wide shot and he's suddenly gripping it with all his fingers curled in. Submitted by Christoph Galuschka

Continuity: While Anakin and Palpatine are talking at the performance, in one shot of Anakin we see Palpatine turn his head side on to the camera and drop his chin to his chest. In the very next shot he's holding his head high. Submitted by Jon Sandys

Continuity: On Utapau, when Obi-wan faces off with Grievous, Grievous sends 4 magma droids at Obi-wan. Obi-wan force-pulls something from the ceiling to crush the droids. But in the ensuing fight between Obi-wan and Grievous afterwards, the ceiling thing and crushed droids are gone.

Continuity: In the Mace Windu/Palpatine fight scene, the glass window is shattered after being hit by a lightsaber. However, while Palpatine is talking to Anakin after the fight, you can still see Anakin's reflection in the space where the glass was.

Continuity: In the scene where Anakin arrives on Mustafar and tells R2-D2 to stay with the ship, as he pulls the hood of his robe over his head, his mechanical hand is on his left hand and not on his right as it should be.

Continuity: When Anakin is in the medical centre lying on his back being transformed into Darth Vader, you can see the main part of the mask being lowered into place but Anakin is not wearing the neck section of the mask that it connects to. We then see the main part lowering directly downwards, in the next shot the neck section is in place.

Continuity: Near the start, as Anakin and the politicians start walking away, Jar-Jar says "excuse me" to a large blue creature next to him. In the next, wider shot, there's now another creature between them. Submitted by Jon Sandys

Other: During the scene of Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader, there is a close up shot of his face just before his helmet is put in place. All of his face is shown as being badly burned with the exception of his eyelashes, which are still impossibly there. Subjecting one's face to any heat source hot enough to sear one's face will also burn away one's eyelashes as well.

Continuity: Anakin has his lightsaber in his hands immediately after having his handcuffs cut off on the bridge of General Grievous' ship. In the next shot, he has to force-retrieve it from Grievous.

Continuity: When Obi-Wan meets Anakin on the landing bay of the volcanic planet, Obi-Wan comes down the ramp from the ship and removes his cloak. It lays across the end of the ramp. The shot changes, then comes back, and the cloak is now bunched off to one side.

Continuity: When Anakin has just had the bad dream, Padme comes out wearing the nightdress with rows of beads around her arms. In one shot, the beads on her right arm are twisted, in the next, they're straight again.

Continuity: When Mace Windu and Palpatine are in his office after the lightsaber battle, Palpatine scrabbles into the corner as Windu paces towards him, ending up directly over him with lightsaber pointed at his throat. As Anakin walks in, Palpatine is already backed into the corner and Windu needs a few paces to get to him.

Audio problem: When Samuel L. Jackson says "I don't think the boy can handle it, I don't trust him" his lips don't match his dialogue when he says "I don't trust him".

Continuity: After the crash landing on Coruscant, Anakin, Kenobi, and Palpatine take a shuttle to the Jedi Council. In the first shot as the shuttle is landing, all shadows are parallel with the edge of the landing area. In the next shot when the shuttle doors open, all shadows have shifted 45-degrees clockwise.

Continuity: During Obi-Wan's departure scene on Coruscant, when he is telling Anakin how proud he is of him, Obi-Wan's eye color shifts from Ewan McGregor's' natural blue-green eyes to a dark brown.

Continuity: During the Anakin/Obi-Wan fight scene Obi Wan switches lightsabers with Anakin. When Anakin is strangling him we can definitely see that Obi-Wan is holding Anakin's lightsaber in his right hand (note the hilt design), but when the shot is reversed Obi-Wan is holding his own lightsaber in that hand.

Azumi tells the story of a young woman (Aya Ueto) trained since her youth to become an assassin. her mission, along with nine fellow assassins, is to kill all the warlords who will threaten the peace. But, to be assassin means to be able to become inhuman. This film, that takes place in an unreal feudal time of Japan, relates the striving of this young woman who tries to preserve the remaining traces of humanity left in her, helped in that by the sweet hearted and lovely Yae (Aya Okamoto), while her universe collapses around her.

This film by Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus) mixes frantic action sequences, typically Japanese humor, huge amount of blood and some touching moments. It is quite obvious that Kitamura’s only aim with this film is to entertain and in that matter, he succeeds perfectly. The viewer should not seek any deep messages in it nor let himself to be distracted by the numerous plot holes, but simply look at the spectacle and have fun. Perhaps the acting is not always very convincing but the majority of the young actors does an honest work. Moreover, the two female characters are so cute!!!

Star Wars Ep III Easter Egg Hunt

Ships Aplenty

Fans know well what audiences around the world are discovering: you simply cannot take in all the detail of a Star Wars movie in one sitting. So intricate and meticulous is each shot that every image tells a rich story. In some cases, that story is kind of funny -- a cleverly placed nod to audience members who know where to look. For eagle eyed viewers, they're called Easter Eggs. Sometimes they're inside jokes. Other times, they're just interesting details that are very easy to overlook.

Here's a list of some of those little must-see moments that you may have missed. Consult this list the next time you go see Episode III and count how many you can spot.

Spoiler Warning: If you haven't seen Episode III yet, you may not want to read ahead.

kitchen sink

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

During the space battle, when a blue laser beam lances out of the belly bay of a massive Republic Star Destroyer and splits a Banking Clan frigate in two, it unleashes a blossoming explosion with streaming debris. The camera pans along with one sizable chunk as it slams back into the Republic vessel. That is indeed a kitchen sink.

"the Wilhelm."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

An audio easter egg -- and hallowed tradition of Star Wars -- is the piercing scream affectionately called "the Wilhelm." It's a decades-old audio recording of a very distinctive scream that has become a "pet sound effect" to many sound editors, though Ben Burtt deserves special mention for surreptitiously spreading it through the movies he's worked on. It can be heard shouted by a clone trooper thrown by an exploding weapons emplacement during the opening space battle.

stay on target...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Subtly providing some nice connective tissue to the original trilogy are the designs of the starfighter targeting computers. The display screens in Anakin and Obi-Wan's Jedi fighters very closely resemble those on Darth Vader's TIE fighter, while the little icons lining the screens of the clone fighters look a lot like those found on the X-wings.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

destroyers and donuts

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

There's so much happening high above Coruscant that it's hard to single out one spectacle not to miss. There's a very intriguing tangle that has a triangular Republic destroyer caught within the arms of a massive ring-shaped Trade Federation battleship. It's hard to tell what's happening here: perhaps the Federation ship has somehow captured the Republic vessel in its clutches. According to the Animatics Department that plotted out the space battle, the Republic ship is docked with a captive donut ship, and teams of clone troopers are tearing through the corridors.

the Falcon

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

It's tiny, but visible enough to send a warm fuzzy through the hearts of original trilogy fans. In the establishing shot of the expansive Senate docking bays, there's a tiny Millennium Falcon easing into frame. And it's not just a non-descript Corellian freighter; it's on good authority -- namely George Lucas -- that this is the infamous hunk-of-junk before it came into the ownership of either Lando Calrissian or Han Solo. Also peculiar about that shot: there are no less than three gleaming Naboo star skiffs parked on the lot. Does Padmé have spares?

supporting Senators

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Though it's been reported that the Senatorial plotlines of Episode III were all cut out of the film to keep the focus on Anakin's story, almost all of those supporting Senators are still in the film. The starwars.com databank recently added such Senators as Chi Eekway, Terr Taneel, Nee Alavar, Mon Mothma, Giddean Danu, Malé-Dee, Fang Zar, Meena Tills, and Fema Baab to its encyclopedic entries, and they are all on that platform. Watch for them.

speaking of Jar Jar

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Some press outlets have reported that Jar Jar doesn't utter a single word in this film, but he does. Listen closely as the Senators file in behind Palpatine and enter the building. The bungling Gungan accidentally invades Senator Orn Free Taa's personal space, provoking an exchange of "Watch it." "Excuse me."

Expanded universe fans may have had their ears perk up when Obi-Wan gives the single-sentence summary of the Jedi briefing Anakin just missed. He mentions that Master Vos has moved his troops to Boz Pity. That is indeed a reference to Quinlan Vos, who was almost slated to appear in Episode III. Lucas included the comic book Jedi in the script, though his sequence was never filmed.

Opera House - Dannl Faytonni

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Opera House - Baron Papanoida

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Who's who at the opera! There's many familiar faces to spot at the Galaxies Opera House, though given the exotic -- and sometimes immodestly dressed -- patrons seen milling about, it can be hard to spot them. As Anakin runs up the carpeted staircase, one of the guests he passes is Dannl Faytonni, the human character first played by an unmasked Anthony Daniels in Episode II. The man behind C-3PO gets to show his features once more, if ever so briefly, only this time he's wearing a captain's rank and a tall hat, suggesting he's moved up the social ladder.

Once inside, Anakin weaves through a bustling corridor. Blink, and you'll miss such returning aliens as Horox Ryyder (from Episode I), Greeata and Rystáll (from Episode VI) as well as the most notable cameo. Talking to Senator Chi Eekway is the blue-skinned Baron Papanoida -- cameo appearances for Katie Lucas and her father, writer-director George Lucas. His other daughter, Amanda Lucas, is also in this shot as Senator Terr Taneel.

In the next shot, as Anakin settles into Palpatine's viewing box, take a look at box adjacent to the Chancellor's. It is filled with notable names from Industrial Light & Magic. Seated from left to right (first row) are Visual Effects Producer Jill Brooks, Animation Supervisor Rob Coleman, Visual Effects Producer Janet Lewin, (and back row) Visual Effects Supervisor Roger Guyett, Visual Effects Producer Denise Ream, and Visual Effects Supervisor John Knoll. If you look at the shots that favor Palpatine during his wistful retelling of the Darth Plagueis yarn, you'll see Knoll sitting over his shoulder.

Opera House - Janu Godalhi.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

In the same establishing shot of the interior of the Opera House is another Easter Egg strolling down the aisles. Dressed in a long green robe is Hyperspace's Set Diarist and Star Wars Insider columnist Pablo Hidalgo as Janu Godalhi. You can read about how his cameo came to be and see pictures of the shoot in this exclusive Post Production report here.

If you wanted to split hairs about continuity, Coleman, Guyett, Ream, Brooks and Hidalgo are also in the far background of the preceding staircase shot, suggesting that they somehow beat a running Anakin to the inside of the theater.

Kashyyyk - alien riders

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

In the establishing shot of Kashyyyk, the Wookiee aircraft are accompanied by giant dragonfly creatures like can-cells. If you look carefully, they have little alien riders: adventurous Aleenan aliens, the same species as the scrappy Podracer, Ratts Tyerell. Yeehaw!

Kashyyyk - destroyer

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

It gives you an idea of scale if you somehow manage to miss an entire Star Destroyer, but it happens. When the establishing fly-into Kashyyyk ends, parked behind the trees is Yoda's Republic Star Destroyer.

Kashyyyk - Luminara

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Yoda's not the only Jedi on Kashyyyk. Organizing defenses on the beach is Luminara Unduli, only here she's not played by Mary Oyaya for her single shot. It's Art Department Supervisor Fay David. She had previously played a handmaiden in Episode I and Shaak Ti (in the library scenes) in Episode II.

not Sing

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Some fans think they spot Aurra Sing, the chalk-skinned bald-headed bounty hunter from Episode I, in the sculpted frieze hanging in Palpatine's office. It's not really, but the sculpture is worth taking a look at. It depicts an ancient battle between Jedi and dark side-corrupted creatures and aliens.

"The Clontender"

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

There's a lot going on in the brief shot of the dragon pen before Boga comes bounding into frame. There's a little Utai alien luring a dactillion -- a pterodactyl like creature -- to roost with a piece of meat, and a gaunt Utapaun taking a dog-sized spider for a walk.

fork-wielding Utapaun

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

In the background of the 10th Level, as Obi-Wan whistles for Boga to come and give chase to General Grievous, look in the background. A clone trooper has lost his rifle and is essentially boxing with a battle droid.

If you've seen the fork-wielding Utapaun action figure and were wondering just where it is in the film, you'll have to look quickly. This warrior can be seen riding on the back of a dactillion as the battle erupts on Utapau.

Battleground Bits

get me a medic

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Who says clones are compassionless? During the Battle of Utapau, we can see one clone trooper leaning over a fallen comrade, calling for medical assistant. If the animation of the clones seems particularly realistic, ILM animators used motion capture data of real military maneuvers.

upended AT-TE

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Earlier in the film, we heard Obi-Wan Kenobi report that Saleucami had fallen. As a nice bit of consistency, before the mutinous clone troopers blast Stass Allie's speeder to smithereens, you can the legs of an upended AT-TE walker, evidence than extended fighting had finally finished. During the crash, you can see clone trooper bodies littering the ground.

Captain Colton

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Yes, that is Jeremy Bulloch in the role of Captain Colton. He's the pilot of the Tantive IV as the Alderaanian starship returns to Coruscant for a special session of the Senate.

shot through the heart

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

One of those blink and you miss it shocker moments is Yoda's unorthodox use of a lightsaber to take out a clone at the Jedi Temple. The little Jedi Master locks his 'saber on, and throws it, plunging it deep into a clone's chest. He then scrabbles up the falling clone, plucking his weapon out of the dead soldier. As chronicled in the Making of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Lucas was a bit hesitant about including this move. The book reported the scene as cut out, but as amazed audiences who see it can testify, the kill stayed in the picture.

slain Jedi

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

As Obi-Wan watches the hologram recording, he sees Anakin slay three Jedi. The boy who has his back to the camera is Whie, played by Coinneach Alexander. The girl is Bene, who Anakin strangles. She is played by Mousy McCallum. The adult Jedi Master who puts up a fight is Cin Drallig, played by Stunt Coordinator and Swordmaster, Nick Gillard.

What you didn't see:
Fans who meticulously studied the release trailer may have noticed two shots nowhere to be found in the finished film. One is of a determined hooded Anakin marching down the Trade Federation cruiser hallway, and the other is of Ki-Adi-Mundi reluctantly turning to face some unseen fate while in the Jedi gunship hangar.

trailer shots

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

These shots were never intended for the final film but were needed to help fill out the story told in the trailer. The Anakin shot had been cut -- it was from the Jedi Temple attack. If you look at the animatics version of the shot (Hyperspace members, click here to see it), you can get an idea of what the shot was originally meant to represent. The footage was deemed trailer appropriate, so ILM composited the greenscreen footage of Anakin against a background plate of the cruiser hallway.

Though Ki-Adi-Mundi's shot was used in the finished film, by the time of the trailer, the background Mygeeto environment hadn't been completed. So, the Jedi Temple hangar was substituted instead.

This of course is only just a handful of things to spot. It is by no means an exhaustive list. Keep watching Episode III and chronicling your discussion on the Official Message Boards, or if you're a Hyperspace member, in your Star Wars Blog.

Why The Simple Blog

I am keeping my blog simple now, because of some reasons:

1) It is hard to find a good skin for blog hosted by blogspot and I do not know HTML so it's hard to design my own skin.

2) Simple blog is easier to navigate because of less flashy stuff and more simpler interface.

3) I just started to blog and is still searching for a good skin that can last a long time if permanent.

Today I'm reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the 5th book of the Harry Potter series. Have to finish the book before the next Harry Potter book gets published in July, and it's called Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.

2 more days to the official opening of Revenge Of The Sith.

Shocking photos of Natalie Portman(Queen Amaidala of Naboo), is she turning into a nun or what?

MPAA continues to bring down sites providing TV shows downloads

Continuing its war on Internet file-swapping sites, the Motion Picture Association of America said Thursday that it has filed lawsuits against a half-dozen hubs for TV show trading.

The trade association said that piracy of TV programming is growing quickly online, and that shows are as important to protect as big-budget films. This is the first legal action from the group that has focused most heavily on TV content.

"Every television series depends on other markets (such as) syndication and international sales to earn back the enormous investment required to produce the comedies and dramas we all enjoy," MPAA Chief Executive Officer Dan Glickman said in a statement. "Those markets are substantially hurt when that content is stolen."

The latest round of suits retains a focus on BitTorrent technology, which has been widely used online to distribute movies and films.

The suits are focused on the sites that serve as traffic directors for BitTorrent swaps, rather than on individual computer users uploading and downloading content. The MPAA also has sued individuals, but has not said how many people have been targeted.

The six sites sued Thursday include ShunTV, Zonatracker, Btefnet, Scifi-Classics, CDDVDHeaven and Bragginrights.

Revenge Of The Sith OST

This is the summary of the tracks in Revenge Of The Sith OST:

EPISODE III SOUNDTRACK REPORT: Revenge of the Sith

The Revenge of the Sith Soundtrack enters new territory. It's a very operatic piece, more similar to THE PHANTOM MENACE than ATTACK OF THE CLONES. Themes from the other five episodes are interwoven together to create the demise of Anakin Skywalker.

The battle scenes are adventurous with percussion beats that are very 'congo' sounding in their nature. There is also more choral work in this recording than any other episode. If I could break the main score up into smaller sections, it would be; Force Theme, Battle of the Heroes and Padme's tender motifs.

It does suffer from some repetition but that is about the only bad thing I can think of.

01 - Star Wars and The Revenge Of The Sith 7:31

The normal opening crawl is short-lived, unlike other episodes. Whereas normally the scroll fades into infinity, the last part is cut off by a very adventurous yet dangerous motif – the space battle over Coruscant. After this brief motif, we are first introduced into the one of the most constant Themes on the soundtrack - The Force Theme (which is under-scored with a militaristic beat similar to the Droid Invasion Theme from EPISODE I) which continues for quite a while; no doubt following a long camera shot into battle. The rest of the track continues in this fashion.

02 - Anakin's Dream 4:46

A beautiful Viola solo accompanied by a harp opens Anakin’s Dream. Across the Stars soon can be heard underneath the solo before the darker string section hits, and uncertainity arises, only to once again fall into the Love Theme. After more dark cues, the Force Theme echoes things to come.

03 - Battle Of The Heroes 3:42

The new major Theme for Star Wars. The theme consists of a busy bass line with choral pieces intertwined.

04 - Anakin's Betrayal 4:04

Sections of the Love Theme again can be heard with strings and horns interwoven.

05 - General Grievous 4:07

A 'congo' sounding piece that no doubt will sound fantastic on screen.

06 - Palpatine's Teachings 5:25

This track reminds one of the soundtrack of the Dark Crystal. A deep male voice 'chants' with a metallic sound over the top. It then moves into the Love Theme which flows into Vader's Theme. Followed is a variation on the Force Theme - kinda interesting. After some more dark music, a brilliant Arrival at Coruscant theme from EPISODE I ends the piece.

07 - Grievous and the Droids 3:28

Standard fight music here. Very much reminiscent of the EPISODE I 'Droid Invasion' piece.

08 - Padme's Ruminations 3:17

Deadly eerie. It doesn't sound like it should be in Star Wars. A long note held on a double bass glides as Amazonian-like flutes and a synthesised female's solo flows over top. This is just very eerie.

It is soon followed by a movement in the lower strings section that reminds one of Palpatine's Chambers in RETURN OF THE JEDI. Horns pulse every now and then.

09 - Anakin vs. Obi-Wan 3:57

Battle of the Heroes starts off this piece before we quickly get into Vader's Theme. Back to Battle of the Heroes; first solo, then the string section picks it up. There is then another familiar theme (the one which was played during the teaser trailer as Vader rises). We then have a busy string section before more Vader's Theme - followed again by that 'familiar' theme. Enter the Chorus and another section of Battle of Heroes that crescendos into strings and soon the Force Theme with a pumping base raises its head, followed again by Battle of the Heroes.

10 - Anakin's Dark Deeds 4:05

Begins quietly then leads to a wall of chorus (very Lords of the Rings-ish). After a 'fight' like music, it enters on a really soft section that echoes the way Padme is represented in this score. The ending is so sad to the track before before brass finishes it off.

11 - Enter Lord Vader 4:14

A soft introduction is soon met with variations of the Battle of the Heroes Theme. There is a small part of this that reminds of the music from the Rebels in the Original Trilogy. A miliatristic section soon ends with Vader's Theme and another playing of the Force Theme which is followed by the Emperor's Theme.

12 - The Immolation Scene 2:42

A dark and omnious piece.

13 - Grievous Speaks to Lord Sidious 2:49

Most have heard this on Starwars.com. The end of this piece is a variation on the Love Theme which is dark.

14 - The Birth Of The Twins and Padme's Destiny 3:37

A lilting bass line from Across the Stars is over-scored by a harp and glockenspiel. It is then followed by a majestic version of Qui-Gon's Funeral Theme (which may have just become the Naboo Funeral Theme) and is played about three times in total.

15 - A New Hope and End Credits 13:06

This is the longest piece of music on the soundtrack. A beautiful segue into Leia's Theme is followed by the Force Theme. The Force Theme is repeated and grows (but don't expect a big finale) before we enter the End Credit sequence.

Leia's Theme follows the standard Star Wars End Credit Theme. Battle of the Heroes takes off where Leia's Theme finishes. The Throne Room Theme then hits in at the end of BotH. The middle section of the The Throne Room is extremely legato compared to the ending in A NEW HOPE. After this part is finished its back into the main section.

It sounds like it is about to finish as in A NEW HOPE when it suddenly enters a really delicate version of the Force Theme. The Theme then shifts up and plays again before entering the Throne Room Theme once more. This plays out until the finale Star Wars Theme.

Post Notes: The Score Begins
February 03, 2005

When theater lights darken this May, and the rolling drums and fanfare of the 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm logos fade out, fans will brace themselves for that first triumphant blast of brass that signals the start of Episode III. The famous main title theme is not what started off today's scoring sessions at Abbey Road Studios -- like the filming process, scoring is rarely ever done in movie-sequence. The first piece of music recorded for Revenge of the Sith was instead something six reels into the story.

Composer John Williams has written over 40 distinct cues for the Episode III score, to be performed over the next few days by the London Symphony Orchestra. The recording order is delineated on an oversized printout, marking the title of the cue and the reel where it resides. These titles are more for internal use -- they rarely ever make it to the liner notes of soundtrack albums since these cues are often combined and edited to make playable tracks. My guess is that cues like "Boys Into Battle" and "Palpatine's TV Set" will likely get renamed before readied for public consumption.

Today starts with "Padmé's Visit," the music that accompanies a tense and dramatic encounter between Anakin and Padmé. The young lovers have shed the starry-eyed innocence of Episode II, worn down by witnessing years of warfare and deception. Though the love theme from Attack of the Clones appears in this cue, there's a sense of desperation behind it, of time ticking away. Anakin's troubled nature is signaled by the creeping approach of the Imperial March -- Darth Vader's theme from The Empire Strikes Back. The deep bass tones that lurk behind the love theme color the drama.

The next cue jumps to the early moments of film, to the first lightsaber duel in a movie packed with many. It's the three-way rematch that sees Anakin and Obi-Wan once again square off against Count Dooku. The frenetic on-screen action is accompanied by aggressive combat music devoid of any familiar character-based themes. The percussive music, accented with cymbal hits, underscores the lightsaber attack, but it isn't particularly timed to each hit. To do so would be impractical, given the intensity of the sound design that will accompany this lightsaber action.

An angry roll of timpani accompanies the fight's denouement, silencing the orchestra in its wake. Then come some tentative strings, exploring the uncomfortable silence that follows.

"Can the clicks be louder," asks Williams of the control room. The assembled musicians all wear headphones that play a "click track," a series of timed clicks meant to keep them all in the same beat. "They sound a bit wooly," says Williams.

Shawn Murphy, the Scoring Engineer complies. He sits in the control room, carefully listening to the orchestra as they are recorded. He makes notes on any irregularities in the music, citing measures that need to be revisited.

After each take, Williams comes into the control room along with principal musicians to hear what the microphones captured. From there, they can make adjustments for subsequent takes. Together, Murphy and Williams gauge each performance and determine how much to re-record. Rather than wear down the orchestra by re-recording entire cues, they often target specific trouble spots, prompting the orchestra to replay certain measures to be edited into the surrounding music. Still, sometimes the entire cue is re-recorded.

The next selection for the day is "Palpatine's Seduction." Even in the heavily soundproofed confines of the control room, I can still feel the low vibrations. The music covers a conversation between Anakin and Palpatine within the Chancellor's office. We in the control room hear none of the dialogue. The picture, played on a regular television monitor in the booth and on a relatively washed out screen on the scoring stage (projection in a fully lit room will do that) has graphical pops and streamers atop the image in sync with the click track.

Perhaps my ears are playing tricks on me, but I think I can hear a little refrain of Shmi's tragic last moments in this scene. A strong connection stirs between Anakin and Palpatine, as voiced by the strings. A bass drum is responsible for the tremors. By scene's end, the Emperor's theme rises -- played here without a choir -- with the luring strings continuing underneath, finally culminating in a growing cymbal roll that accompanies the scene-wipe that takes us to Utapau and Obi-Wan's continued hunt for General Grievous.

"I love the dark stuff," says George Lucas, relishing the tones prevalent throughout this score.

Next up is "Heroes Collide," the much anticipated start to the duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin. A new theme, carried mostly by the brass section, follows the two Jedi as their duel takes them from an outside landing platform to the inside of an industrial facility. The music alternates between sweeping strokes and fast punctuation -- not unlike the lightsaber duel itself. As is common in the final reels of a Star Wars movie, the action intercuts from one story to another. Those concerned about the action being compromised by cutting away needn't worry -- what's playing opposite this duel is a confrontation just as big and anticipated, though it doesn't last as long, so the remainder of Obi-Wan and Anakin's battle plays through uninterrupted.

At one point in this cue, the music sounds almost exactly as it did in The Empire Strikes Back, when Darth Vader begins pummeling Luke with equipment tossed telekinetically. In both that Episode V moment and this Episode III moment, we hear a grandiose presentation of the Imperial March with sharp brass accents.

Closing your eyes, you can still track the progress of the battle. The music holds to accommodate dialogue during the fight. When lightsabers lock and opponents stare at each other over crossed blades, the strings vibrate brilliantly, building the tension and drama. At one point during in the duel, Obi-Wan and Anakin are caught in competing Force pushes, outstretched hands locking a few centimeters apart. Here, the elegant Force theme emerges from the frantic fighting, but it sounds pained, echoing the struggle.

Shawn notes that the sound quality of the loud percussion affects that of the rest of the orchestra, so William conducts the next take without percussion. As it turns out, even this huge stage is too small to contain the powerful drums. They may be recorded later, under different circumstances.

Lucas points out that this portion of the fight seems to be lacking an expected ingredient: the Duel of the Fates from The Phantom Menace. "That comes later. In the big duel," says Williams.

According to the schedule, those were the only four pieces slated for today, but the orchestra continues, and four more cues are performed. "Another Happy Landing" is a short piece of music, the first cue to occur after the hectic pace of the chaotic space battle. Now, we can take time to peacefully introduce Coruscant and its skyline with a pageantry reminiscent of the first majestic introduction of the city-planet back in Episode I. "Yoda's Fall" is a very brief piece, less than a minute in length, that underscores a specific action.

Next is "Revisiting Padmé," which covers the reunion of the lovers, Anakin and Padmé, in the film. It contains the familiar love theme from Episode II, but there's an interesting juxtaposition in tone. Proof that music greatly affects the perception of a scene, I remember seeing this sequence un-scored and feeling one way about it. In the rough cut, creepy temp music was inserted to an otherwise tame scene of tender exchanges. Here, in the final score, it's not so much creepy, but there is an undercurrent of dark uncertainty. Padmé brings a purity to it, in the form of a unblemished woodwind recitation of the love theme that crescendos to the next wipe.

"So, people, what I'm proposing what we do for the remainder of today is 7M1," says Williams. It's title is, currently, unprintable for the sake of the spoiler-free majority that reads these reports. That's the case with almost everything that happens in the 7th reel. And, true to the film's end, it is tragic and emotional.

Disclaimer: Of course, a dozen people can listen to the same piece of music and come away with a dozen different impressions, but I can't think of how else to report what I heard than by expressing what I felt. Please keep that in mind when reading these Post Notes from scoring.

Spotted today: Hayden Christensen couldn't resist the opportunity to witness the scoring session -- a first for him. Also visiting today is Director and Jedi Master Frank Oz, who will soon return to the backwards-patterned speech to record some loop lines for Yoda this weekend.

Oh, another thing: The main title isn't part of the planned scoring sessions -- a pre-existing recording of the famous Star Wars theme will be used instead.

Email Clearing Day

Today I spent much of the day clearing up my nus email mailbox. I have about 300+ messages in my nus mailbox. Because I have no time to clear during the school term, so holidays then do a massive cleanup before the next semester starts. There is mostly a lot of important email messages in my inbox so I never deleted them during the term. But today I have exported all of the email messages out into my system, so I can safely deleted all my inbox messages, leaving about 5 messages in my inbox.
