I had been delaying reviewing this album because I did not have enough time and did not have the right mood to do it which explains why the album is only reviewed after 1 month when it had been released.

I have always loved sad songs and my favourite song for Cyndi With You album is 我會好好的 meaning “I’ll be fine. This is a follow up song from Cyndi’s previous 2nd album Cyndi Loves You track number 3 -明天见 meaning “See you tomorrow”. Notice that these 2 songs have similar tunes akin to Wu Bai’s rock tunes. I like the MTV of 我會好好的, especially the beginning where she had to cry and the scene is filmed in the rain. By the end of the MTV, Cyndi also has to run in the rain. 我會好好的 and 明天见 MTVs both use the effect of rain to create a sombre mood.

The most touching scene I like in Ming Tian Jian is when Cyndi wakes up to find the guy gone. Also like the scene when Cyndi runs together with the guy holding the firecracker thing - in the end the guy outruns Cyndi and Cyndi becomes alone by herself.

Wu Bai who composed Wo Hui Hao Hao De for Cyndi mentioned that the feeling he had of Cyndi is that he seemed to know her for a long time, and he has a certain relationship with her(unsure if it is love or friendship). Why he has this feeling, he could not explain. So he starts to write the song from this perspective. The original title for this song is meant to be 愛情的 友情的 meaning love or friendship. The crux of the song means that when the guy leaves the girl, the girl will say that she’s fine, the sky has not fallen down and everything is as per normal. Hence, the title of this song has been changed to 我會好好的 meaning “I’ll be fine”. Wu Bai feels that Cyndi needs to have a feeling that she can be able to grasp to express her feelings in the song, and hence to give Cyndi some simple words to be able to express to the audience what she feels in her heart.

While the best track from my opinion is 我會好好的, I find that most if not all of the other tracks of Cyndi With You album are nice too. Track number 1 睫毛彎彎 is a mixture of Eastern music with western style. It portrays the first meeting of two strangers who instantly develop a liking for each other and at the same time feeling excited and shy. Track number 4 is a unique song in the album because it incorporates African tribal musical style(Woosa) into the essence of the song itself. Track number 5 is written by Singaporean songwriter Lin Jun Jie for Cyndi titled 手錶 meaning “Watch”. It is the second song written for Cyndi by Lin Jun Jie, the first of which is 当你 from the first album. It uses the metaphor of watch, to portray the constant desire to be at the side of your loved one, to protect him/her. Track number 6 想和你 is my second most favourite song in the album because of it has a catchy tune and light hearted “happy” music which will help one to lift out of any moody feelings that he is experiencing at the moment upon listening to the song. It is a song to cure your Monday Blues. Track number 7 - You are my only love, another song that is sad. Cyndi’s improvement shown in this track: the use of real and fake vocals in the portrayal of this song. The song says that when two lovers separated, they can only stand on opposite ends of central line, each looking out for themselves. This follows up with track 8 太陽萬歲 a song of uplifting spirits in the genre of Sweet Classical Dance to lighten up one’s moods. Track number 9 丟銅板 epitomizes the good and bad that you will experience when you are in love with another person, just like flipping a coin, you can get either a good or bad side – in love you will get both bitter and sweetness. The final track 10 梦的光点 is the first track to finish being composed for the album. It had been the opening theme for a cartoon showing in China titled “神兵小英雄. The following phrase summarises the essence of this track:

“我追着梦的光点是因为有了勇气才不怕危险，你的爱没有上限给我力量继续往前，我追着梦的光点心连心站在同一边的起跑线，加速度冲出线，仰起了脸，我们微笑一起迎接幸福终点”

It signifies that Cyndi will continue to strike forward with courage, her fans will support her like beacons of light in dreams. A good ending meant for the album which promises the perseverance of the human spirit that no matter how much pitfalls we have gone through, we will not hide and cower in fear.

I noticed that the album tracks are arranged in the pattern of being happy followed by sad:

Track 3 - Sad
Track 4 - Happy
Track 5 - Sad
Track 6 - Happy
Track 7 - Sad
Track 8 - Happy
Track 9 - Sad
Track 10 - Happy

I'm not really sure about Tracks 2, 5, maybe they are both happy and sad at the same time, or perhaps neutral. But nevertheless the pattern is present.




The cover of the album again seeks to promote the cute image of Cyndi. This time, Cyndi wore a specially made Rudolf deer horns/antlers which serve for this purpose. The filming of the lyrics booklet and MTV shots etc were done in Japan at temperatures as low as 9 degrees Celsius. Indeed, the horns was an excellent idea for the album as shown by the large amount of attention that it attracted in Japan from the public looking and pointing at the strange sight of a girl wearing that horn in the busy streets of Japan.

Nevertheless, the album has been largely successful. I would give a 4.5/5 rating for the album as the tracks are nicely done according to my opinion. An album which is a must for Cyndi fans. An option to consider for those who like catchy tunes and some other tracks to perk up your day.

Nicole Kidman's Chanel No. 5 Ad

The Chanel No. 5 perfume product had previously been endorsed by Marilyn Monroe, Catherine Deneuve, and, most recently, Nicole Kidman.

I find this advert interesting because it is unique and different from the normal adverts we are viewing. It is different in the sense that the full advert is 2 minutes long which is four times as long as an ordinary ad which is 30 seconds long, and thus has longer screen time. Also, this advert is filmed to be like a mini movie advert, much like a Hollywood film with a storyline, hence the schemata of this advert may be slightly different from those of normal adverts. As you may have guessed, it is one of the most expensive adverts that had been made and the preparations for this advert had taken for months. Since this advert had been made by the same person(Baz Luhrmann) who made the movie Moulin Rouge, it bears several intertextual reference to that film, especially in the storyline of the advert which is quite similar to that of the movie.
While the advert's main purpose is to promote the perfume product, the product itself does not appear in the video of the advert itself, unlike most other adverts. Only at the end of the advert, do we see the pendent that Nicole Kidman wears around her neck bearing the Chanel No. 5 symbol, but the product and perfume bottle itself do not appear unlike Catherine Zeta Jone's Elizabeth Arden ad where the perfume bottle appears at the end of the advert.
The advert is also able to assert the embodiment of Chanel No. 5: A gazelle-like beauty, vulnerable and rich, seductive and adored just like Nicole Kidman. It hints that whoever uses the perfume will have Nicole's characteristics transferred onto the wearer. Nicole is just the right person for this ad because she has all of these qualities. The character that Nicole portrays in the advert is quite similar to her experience in real life. She is often on the run from the paparazzi, and in the advert she escapes into a taxi that has already been boarded by a handsome guy who does not know her identity as a celebrity and whom she falls in love with later on which also signifies her desire to escape from the press and be rescued by her male lover.

Today, the postal officer is very kind to call me again to update about the poster tube issue. He told me that he checked with the head office but they cannot find this item. Haiz, so they tried their best already, because for an item that do no not any address stucked onto it, it will be just like searching for a needle in a haystack. Thanks so much for their efforts in helping me. But in this case the loss for me is double - money loss as well as item loss...sign.

Some update on poster tube issue:

Today the postman called me again, because yesterday I emailed them for any follow up news. He said that he can't find it. And I asked him what will happen to mails that don't have sender address and return address. The reply is that all these types of mails will go to the head post office, and will be destroyed within 2 weeks. Yeah, that's all the news he had for me. So it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. I don't know how to get a replacement poster now, because it's a gift item and no one will want to sell it separately. I just hope that I can get some money back so that I can go and buy another one(maybe the whole thing).



An upcoming Taiwan series starring Angela Zhang Shao Han. On the surface this looks to be a series of the horror/ghost story type. Angela is portraying 2 characters in this series. The first is the 17 years old girl who had accidentally fallen to her death from a building. The second portrayal is of a twin sister who looks exactly the same. While searching for the truth of the death of her twin sister, she discovered a shocking secret. More info coming soon...



Another upcoming Taiwan idol series is of the title called the magicians of love starring 183 club members including ming dao and the female main cast of Qiao Qiao from Sweety. The series is supposed to start airing on Taiwan Settv on 18 Feb 06 every saturday at 9 pm.

Analysis at the level of discourse – Feminist Stylistics

This is a modified version of a forum posting I made in IVLE:

Feminism has come a long way since Mill’s article(Analysis at the level of discourse – Feminist Stylistics) had been written in 1995, it has been more than ten years since this article was written. Females are no longer portrayed so negatively in the media(although this negative portrayal still exists), perhaps due to the actions carried out by feminists to improve their positions in society and also due to contemporary society, where traditional beliefs no longer hold so firm a position.

Here are some examples where female traditional roles have been subverted:

Characters/roles


In Mill’s article, she mentioned that “characters and roles for women and men in fiction and other areas are informed by stereotypes of what is appropriate according to gender norms. This is extremely restricting on women in particular, since they are restricted to inactivity, sexual attractiveness, or self-deprecation.”


- The Matrix

In the film the Matrix(made in 1999), most of the female casts play an active role in the film. The character of Trinity, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, is considered as just as important a character as the main protagonist who is Neo. Without her, Neo would not have survived in the film, because Trinity saved Neo twice in the film. Another character, Switch, played by Belinda McClory, is equally as active a female character as the other male characters – they fight side by side in the movie, without any sexual difference. Only once in the film is there a female character casted as a sexual object – The Woman in the Red Dress, whereby she has all the attributes of a perfect woman, she is voluptuous, sexy, and blonde with curves.

- My Sassy Girl(Jeon Ji Hyun) (but she is still portrayed as a sex object)

My Sassy Girl is the famous Korean film(made in 2001) that propelled Jeon Ji Hyun to stardom. In this film, the character portrayed by her is fierce, and is often seen bullying the other guys in the film, especially the male protagonist. This is unlike the typical role of a female character. An example is in the beginning of the film, whereby she shouts at the guy that do not give up his seat for the elderly, the guy is so intimidated by her that eventually he stands up and offers his seat for the elderly.

Although much of Jeon Ji Hyun’s film role in My Sassy Girl is considered as positive and active portrayal of a female character, she is still portrayed as a sex object. This is evident in some of the advertisements that she appears in, an example being the Banned Giordano CM where she dances sexily and shows off her body. Thus, this goes to show that even though some success has been achieved in trying to make man and woman’s roles to be equal, there still exists a stereotypical notion of female roles, especially as being a sexual object.

- Charmed

“Charmed is a U.S. television series by Aaron Spelling about three sisters who are powerful good witches known throughout the supernatural community as "The Charmed Ones." The main protagonists in these series are the three female characters namely Holly Marie Combs - Piper Halliwell, Alyssa Milano - Phoebe Halliwell and Rose McGowan - Paige Matthews. In every episode of this series, they would have to battle demons and other supernatural beings who consist mostly of “male demons”, which they succeeded in vanquishing. Their roles in this series are active, and they are present throughout the entire series, with the exception of Rose McGowan who just joined in Season 4. Also, other male characters in this series only acts as the supporting cast, in direct oppositional to traditional male roles. One of the supporting casts is Leo Wyatt: portrayed by Brian Krause, whose character has since being temporarily removed in the middle of the 8th season of this series.
Although the three sisters are portrayed as being independent and active in the series, they still need their male counterparts. For example, when the character of Leo Wyatt was removed temporarily, Piper Halliwell, who is his wife, still can’t let go of the fact that he is gone. This is shown when she expressed reluctance in leaving her house to assist the other sisters in fighting demons because she wanted to take care of her baby son where he was taken care by Leo Wyatt previously when he was around.


- S.H.E World of Warcraft Coke Ad

This advertisement was made in 2005 for promoting the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World Of Warcraft in the Mainland and Taiwan. In this advert, the three girls are portrayed as their normal selves working for their company. When the boss wants them to pose as scantily dressed in an advert, in order to attract and increase the viewership of the audience, they resisted and turned into night elves in this advert. Their boss is in turn transformed into the Orc of the Warcraft universe. The advert ended in the three girls defeating the Orc in the Warcraft universe and returning to their normal selves in reality. But the boss in reality, turns out to become scantily dressed himself at the end of the advert. This advert shows the triumph of feminism against traditional roles for the female character whereby the roles of S.H.E and their boss are exchanged because at the end of the film we can see that the boss himself is scantily dressed, instead of S.H.E.

Although the portrayal of S.H.E was positive in the advert, they are still marketed as being cute and feminine. This can be seen from their latest album Once Upon A Time 不想長大 where their image on the cover of the album is as dolls(traditional associated image for girls).

On a final note, I feel that feminism has indeed come further since Mill’s writing in 1995. Female portrayals in the media have improved to a certain extent, although the stereotype of woman being cute and sexual objects, etc is still present.

Fearless 霍元甲

Fearless 霍元甲 is officially announced by Jet Li as his last action film.

This is what I use my heart to explain my forty two years of life, a kind of feeling, and what I feel about Wushu.

I think this is the last action film, for making a conclusion for my journey of practising martial arts(Wushu) from 8 years old till forty two years old, a conclusion for the journey of my heart.

A storyline that is typical of other action genres of Jet Li, much alike Once Upon a Time In China and Fong Sai Yuk. The story starts off with Jet Li's character 霍元甲 who discovered his father's Wushu manual and taught himself how to fight. Following his numerous fighting victories after mastering the skills in the book, he becomes arrogant. Incidentally, this arrogance would later cause the death of the people he loves the most. Filled with shame, he fled Tianjin and wandered aimlessly until he was Granny Sun and her blind grand-daughter who helped to assuage his pain and his desire to fight. A chance encounter with a Thai fighter rewakened his desire for fighting and he devleoped a new form of fighting style that would become the legendary Mizong(Missing) Fist. 霍元甲enlightened to discover that the essence of fighting lies in the spirit of sportsmanship and not in brutality. Eventually, he returns to Tianjin and engages in a variety of fighting tournaments that would help to restore the honour of his country.

In watching Jet Li's movies, the crux is not truly in enjoying the stoyline or looking at the beautiful landscape scenary in the film, but indulging in Jet Li's iconic martial arts duels. I would say his fighting sequences are choreographed to be the best. In this film, the fighting sequences are also directed by the same people from the Matrix abd Kill Bill.

Nonetheless, the last action film of Jet Li makes this a must for people who likes action films or who are supporters of Jet Li movies. But audiences who do not like this genre of films may also consider it because this film will be showing during the holiday season and its a great film for viewing besides the fact that even at the age of forty two, Jet Li still looks to be charismatically well adorned, although the signs of ageing is visible in close up views.

Jay Chou has been given the opportunity to sing the theme for the movie whose title is the same name as the movie 霍元甲. In an interview given to Jay Chou, he said that this is his dream come true because he is finally able to sing the movie song for his idol which is Jet Li. Jay has not missed a single movie of Jet Li which he had made in the past. In the publicity session for promoting the movie, Jay Chou meets up with Jet Li and they exchanged with each other their individual works - Jay handed over his musical theme for 霍元甲to Jet Li and Jet Li passed his self written martial arts Wushu booklet to Jay.
