Storytelling Assignment and Linguistic Analysis of Dubliners

Currently, I'm completing these 2 assignments. The first is creating 8 plots out of a story premise which is as follows:

Story Premise:

In a far off Land of two boys grew up the best of friends. But over the years they have drifted farther apart and found differing places in society. followed his father into the Corp, a group tasked with keeping the Land safe. has built his life around the seedy Underworld, the part of society kept hidden from the rest of the land. He knows it well and is comfortable with its inner workings. Now, a top minister of the Land has gone missing, taken somehow into the depths of the Underworld. is asked to find him and he calls upon his friend to help.

The first draft is no that great because I had used the same beginnings for the 8 plots and secondly, I had not created a dramatic effect by fleshing out the emotional relationship between Name 1 and Name 2. I had just edited the draft and resent it to the lecturer for evaluation.

What does the story needs to have?

Firstly it needs to be like an Aristotelien story which has a beginning(exposition) which consists of the inciting incident, a middle which contains the main plot points or the meat of the story and most importantly is the turning point which will usually drive the story in a different and unexpected direction. And finally, the ending of the story where the climax (the highest point of the story) precedes the ending and followed by the resolution of the story where almost everything ends up with their loose ends tied. The key to creating a dramatic story is to create a kind of tension between the main characters where based on their relationships, determine their actions which is like a cause and effect theory.

The 2nd assignment is to linguistically analyse the short story "The Sister" in Dubliners.

What do I need to focus on the long essay?

1. Focusing on the Nouns/Verbs, Adjectives/Adverbs and the Clause.
2. Focusing on the various themes in the story.
3. Connecting the linguistic style of the story used with the most important themes in the story.
4. Arguing why a linguistic analysis is important with regards to the specific kind of literary stylistics that is being used to write the story, which ultimately reveal that the style of the story may or may not intentionally be used by the author to portray to the reader a certain effect or to reflect the main theme of the story itself.

Advergames presentation and Advertising Mid Term

Long time din blog already. Just this Wed had the Ecommerce presentation which is on advergames which I find to be quite interesting because the topic is on advertising which I'm also learning in NM3215. Joanna found a very cute advergame for demonstration, it is so simple, therefore we can effectively use it to demonstrate for the presentation. It's called the Bob A Pop game which can be found at http://kids.icecream.com The game looks like this:

I think Joanna is really very good on the project, she is able to add in 2 more slides into the presentation from the concepts that we learnt immediately in the lecture before the tutorial itself. And she also told us to make the presentation more interactive by adding some questions to ask the audience for their feedback!!

We also showed the honda advergame to show the pitfalls of this advergame which is requiring the user to enter too many personal information on the webpage that will put him off from the game. Anti-McDonalds advergame is used to demonstrate the effect of satirizing the companies for their "illegal practises" in the production of their foods. The presentation went quite well and after its over, I had this load off my workload so I can focus on other major projects.

Earlier today on Fri, I had this advertising mid term test. There was a total of 33 MCq questions and I was taking Paper Type B. There were multiple exam papers (according to my friend which is 5) created to minimize people from copying from each other. I made some mistakes in the paper...Here are the questions that I answered wrongly:

1. Consumer behaviour can be defined as the process and activities people engage in when searching for, selecting, purchasing, using, evaluating, and disposing of products and services so as to satisfy their needs and desires.

The answer I put was Learning...

2. The next question ask about some military ad that sends the message to the audience that people who join the army will be able to achieve and fulfil their accomplishments. And the need that is being fulfilled is I think Esteem needs but I put Self-actualization needs.

3.Perception is the process by which an individual receives, selects, organizes, and interprets information to create a meaningful picture of the world.

The answer I put was information search. (I must have confused it with the wordings)

4. The question asking about the couple becoming aware of a springy mattress and the traditional response hierarchy model is Hierarchy of Effects Model, but I wrote the answer as the AIDA model.

5. The Elaboration Likelihood Model is a function of two elements, motivation and ability to process the message.

I wrote the answer as motivation and involvement in the message. (Confusion again with the concepts)

6. I wrote that a more credible source is always more effective than a less credible source but this is not so. (Because a less credible source is used when the audience's initial attitude is favourable.)

Can't remember more, but the lecturer also has some questions to test student's attentiveness during the lecture. I always have problems with MCQ questions cos they look really tricky to me cos the answers are always so similar to each other, if you do not study and put everything in your brain correctly.
